We start with the latest published UN medium projection for 2026 and advance it between reference points using the expected difference between births and deaths.
The global total does not reveal where people live, how old they are or how differently national populations are changing.
UN estimates and the medium projection show long-term growth and its expected slowdown. Historical estimates may be revised when new censuses, registers and national data become available.
Estimate and projection boundary: 1950–2023 are UN historical estimates. Values from 2024 to 2100 are the medium projection.
The counter advances a published reference value using the annual net change.

We use World Population Prospects 2024, the latest global UN revision available when checked on 11 August 2026. The series contains historical estimates through 2023 and a medium projection from 2024; the running calculation uses the latest published value from that projection.
