What lies behind this number

The number estimates all deaths since the start of the year without separating country, age or cause.

What we count

Deaths from all causes and age groups worldwide since 1 January.

How Metrilum calculates it

The UN combines civil registration, censuses, surveys and demographic models. We scale its 2026 annual value by the elapsed share of the year.

What one number cannot show

The total does not explain causes of death or individual risk. It also omits seasonal variation, while direct registration quality differs across countries.

Deaths over time

UN estimates and projections show total deaths across all causes.

Estimate and projection boundary: 1950, 1975 and 2000 are UN historical estimates. 2025, 2050 and 2100 are medium projections.

01

Annual value

Use the published UN medium projection for 2026.

02

Elapsed share

Scale it by the elapsed share of the year. The counter restarts at the beginning of the next calendar year.

03

Smooth display

The result is recalculated on screen every 0.1 seconds.
