How the source derives it
The US EPA compiles the Toxics Release Inventory from annual reports by facilities in covered industries that exceed reporting thresholds.
What one number cannot show
TRI does not cover every facility or all pollution. Mass alone also does not express a chemical's toxicity or actual risk.
